How do heated driveways work?
In essence, heated driveways keep the surface of the driveway or pavement warm enough so that ice won’t accumulate and snow will melt on contact. The technology has been around for many years, is already widely used in the US, and is similar in concept to underfloor heating systems installed in homes. There are two types:
- One popular heated driveway system uses an electric current to radiate heat across a wire or mat under the surface.
- The other moves hot water through a series of pipes below the surface of the driveway.
The addition of a sensor system means the driveway is only heated when it starts snowing or the temperature falls below a certain level.
